Last week, Assistance League of the Eastside contributed new clothing to Friends of Youth's (FOY) young adult homeless shelter in Redmond, the Landing.

FOY officially celebrated the opening of the Landing, at the Together Center at 16225 N.E. 87th St. in Redmond on Oct. 10. The Landing is the only emergency young adult shelter on the Eastside and is a safe place where homeless young adults are offered a hot dinner, shower, laundry facilities, a safe place to sleep and the opportunity to begin the process of moving towards stable housing.

Assistance League collaborates with other local agencies to help in the short term to fill specific unmet needs in the community in a timely, responsive and flexible way through the Assistance League Outreach program. Through this program, Assistance League and FOY have collaborated on several projects in the past few years: Milk was supplied to the Landing so the young adults could have milk with their cereal in the morning and new, sturdy backpacks were donated for Landing guests to store their things.

Other recent Assistance League Outreach projects have included funding one week of healthy food for Pantry Packs, who supply take-home weekend food for children who might otherwise go hungry; providing sleeper sacks for babies supported by Healthy Start; supplying socks for the homeless with the Together Center and providing laundry supplies to The Sophia Way.

Future projects include providing vacuum cleaners for Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing, laundry supplies for Eastside Winter Shelter and a shopping event for homeless teens in the Lake Washington School District.
