Sammamish man dies on Guye Peak

A 46-year-old Sammamish man died after he reportedly fell while hiking in the Guye Peak area near Snoqualmie Pass on Monday, according to King County Sheriff’s officials.
The victim was an experienced hiker, Sgt. John Urquhart said. The man drove to Alpental’s Snow Lake Trailhead, parked and went for a solo hike. When he didn’t return as he was supposed to, his wife called officials at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, Urquhart said in a press release.
Deputies found the man’s car parked at the trailhead, and Search and Rescue team members went out first thing on Tuesday morning. The victim was spotted just after 7:30 a.m. by officials in the sheriff’s helicopter. His body was in a gully on the east side of Guye Peak. Searchers reached him at about 8 a.m., but he had already died, officials said.
Search and Rescue team members had to use technical rescue methods to remove the man’s body to an area where the sheriff’s helicopter could remove him from the mountain.
The victim’s wife told officials that her husband had planned to go “scrambling” at Guye Peak. Scrambling is a non-technical method of climbing rock falls and other rocky areas, according to an Internet encyclopedia.
