Former Seahawks player Jeremy Lane sentenced for driving high

His DUI charge was reduced to a reckless driving guilty plea in March.

Former Seahawks player Jeremy Lane was sentenced Friday for driving while high through Mercer Island in March.

According to the Seattle PI and ESPN, a judge at King County District Court in Redmond sentenced Lane to 364 suspended days in jail. However, the 27-year-old could avoid going to jail on the condition he completes 20 hours of community service for two days on a work crew.

A Washington State Patrol trooper pulled Lane over on Jan. 14 after he noticed Lane’s sedan speeding with its hazard lights on, charging documents state. The trooper clocked Lane traveling 80 mph going east on Interstate 90 near Island Crest Way on Mercer Island.

The trooper watched Lane’s vehicle change lanes without signaling and swerve between lanes before he pulled Lane over. During their encounter, Lane told the trooper he had his hazard lights on because his home alarm system had been triggered and he was trying to get home.

“Lane’s speech was slurred and slow and his eyes were bloodshot and watery,” charging documents state.

The trooper could smell marijuana inside Lane’s car and asked him to step outside the vehicle. Lane told the trooper he hadn’t drunk anything that day and had smoked marijuana about three hours prior to driving. However, after performing and failing field sobriety tests, the trooper arrested Lane on suspicion of driving under the influence. Although Lane had blown a .039, under the legal .08 limit for alcohol, the trooper suspected he was impaired from the combination of marijuana and alcohol in his system.

The trooper received a warrant to collect Lane’s blood, which later revealed he was over the legal limit of 5 nanograms of THC from marijuana. Lane’s level was was 7.6 nanograms.

On March 26, Lane pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

Lane played for the Seattle Seahawks from April 2012 to March 9 of this year.
