The Lake Washington PTSA (LWPTSA) Council held its annual Founders’ Day Luncheon at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish on Feb. 24 to celebrate the 120th anniversary of National PTA. Each year at the luncheon, the LWPTSA Council recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding work on behalf of children and youth. The council honored seven individuals and one organization this year.
The Community Service Award recognizes someone who believes in, practices and encourages community involvement. This year’s recipient was Tyler Zangaglia, a junior at Eastlake High School. He was selected for his work as co-founder of The Hope Festival, which serves more than 1,500 needy families and individuals every year.
The Lake Washington Citizens Levy Committee received the Community Outreach Award for its important work supporting the recent bond. The Executive Committee included: Jackie Pendergrass, Kevin Teeley, Eric Campbell, Walt Krueger, Kerri Nielsen, Santos Contreras, Taylor Hawes, Kristin Larson, Traci Pierce, Janene Fogard and Sheila Hagerman. Martha DeAmicis accepted the award on behalf of the Levy Committee. She worked tirelessly to develop a district-wide bond marketing campaign.
The Outstanding Advocate award was presented to Stephanie Lecovin for her dedication in promoting the health, welfare and safety of all students. She serves her local school and also works at the state level supporting effective and healthy schools.
The Certificate of Special Service recognizes individuals who have done an outstanding job in their task for council. Melissa Stone has been selected to receive this award for consistently expanding local projects to serve the entire district, particularly in legislative advocacy and support for the bond.
Jeremy Cromer received this year’s Outstanding Educator award for his embodiment of every characteristic an excellent educator should possess: enthusiasm, firsthand knowledge of his subject, class management skills and providing ongoing opportunities for students to practice critical thinking and problem-solving. His work as an adviser for the Lake Washington High School Robotics Club was exemplary.
Susan Seabrooks received this year’s Golden Acorn award, presented to an individual whose outstanding service goes above and beyond a particular job description. She has served on many PTSA boards over the years, from elementary to high school and now at the district level. She is consistently outstanding and hardworking, and always willing to serve her community. She also serves as a trustee with the Lake Washington Schools Foundation.
The Outstanding Service award is the highest honor bestowed by the Washington State PTA, recognizing someone who has continually given extraordinary volunteer service benefiting all children. This year’s recipient, Beth Sigall, has served in multiple capacities in PTA where she demonstrates an on-going commitment of service to children and families. She works in multiple organizations, including a nonprofit she founded, as a champion of kids, parents and community engagement.
Jane Dulski received an Honorary Lifetime Membership for her work at the local, council, regional and state level over the past 15 years. She has served on numerous committees, been very involved in training, helped organize conferences and has held many different leadership positions. She is also an active volunteer outside of PTA.
A donation to the Washington State PTA Scholarship Program is made on behalf of the recipients of these awards: Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Advocate, Outstanding Service, and Golden Acorn.
The LWPTSA Council provides support and guidance to the PTA and PTSA leaders and families within the Lake Washington School District.
