Later this month, Aegis Living will celebrate its 19th birthday.

The Redmond-based senior living company will enter the final year of its teens on Thursday and mark the occasion with special celebrations and cake-decorating contests at all of its locations.

Today, Aegis employs more than 2,000 people caring for more than 2,000 residents in communities in Washington, California and Nevada. The bulk of the company’s almost 30 locations are throughout the Pacific Northwest, with a couple in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Adam Clark, general manager at Aegis at Marymoor in Redmond, said between their two locations in Redmond, they serve more than 120 residents and employ more than 300 people.

Clark, son of founder, CEO and board chair Dwayne Clark, said his father founded the business in 1997. The company’s original headquarters was in the basement of a home in the English Hill neighborhood of Redmond and while they have moved locations a few times, Adam said they have always been in Redmond.

The company’s current headquarters location is their fourth since opening.

Adam said his father founded the company after working in senior housing since 1985 and seeing the growth in the market and a need for boutique senior communities with specialized, high-end services. Dwayne wanted to offer creative, out-of-the-box activities for their residents that were unique to the area, Adam said.

Adam has been with Aegis since 2003 and for him, working for the company has been rewarding for the knowledge and wisdom he has gained from the older generation. He has learned from residents who have had so many experiences and have contributed to the regional community as well as to the country.

Adam said in addition to the cake-decorating contest they will hold at the Marymoor location to celebrate the company’s 19 years, they will also hold an around-the-world celebration to recognize the contributions their residents have made globally.

For Adam, it has been a pleasure to serve the Redmond community and it has been great to see it grow in the last 19 years.

In mid-September, Aegis will add to its Puget Sound-area locations with the opening of a new community in Seattle: Aegis of Queen Anne at Rodgers Park.
