The suspect who was killed during an officer-involved shooting at the Kirkland Safeway gas station on Thursday evening was a convicted felon and suspect in an ongoing Redmond Police Department investigation.

The 39-year-old man was a resident of Washington who had served previous prison time and frequented the Kirkland and Redmond area, according to Kirkland police.

Redmond police had contacted the suspect while he was fueling his vehicle outside of the Kingsgate grocery store to initiate the man’s arrest. He was the subject of the Redmond Police Department’s ongoing investigation for his alleged involvement in felony crimes in King County over the previous months.

Redmond detectives had notified Kirkland police regional dispatch (Norcom) on June 13 that they would be in Kirkland conducting surveillance.

The man, whose identification is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin, was not compliant with the investigators’ attempts to arrest him and shots were fired, according to Kirkland police.

Redmond officers administered CPR on the man and called for additional aid to respond. The suspect died at the scene after continued treatment from both medics and firefighters were unsuccessful.

Police located a handgun in the suspect’s possession at the time of the shooting.

The Kirkland Police department is investigating the case.
