Overlake knocks off Bear Creek in tennis
The Overlake and Bear Creek Schools split the two singles matches, but Overlake swept the doubles matches in a nonleague boys tennis match as the Owls beat the Grizzlies, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon.
Overlakes Keith Wilkes won the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-3 against Tim Hughes. Bear Creeks Alex Finkelson won No. 2 singles against Rob Munoz 7-6 (3), 6-1.
But the Grizzlies, who had just three tennis players try out for the program, couldnt compete with the Owls depth.
Overlake won all three doubles matches in straight sets. Pratik Keni and Ed Sampson won No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-2, while Nishant Velagupudi and Henk Wolda blanked the Grizzlies in No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0. Grant and Marcus Munoz nearly did the same in No. 3 doubles, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Overlake girls tennis handles Forest Ridge
The Overlake girls tennis team swept all five matches in straight sets against Forest Ridge on Monday in a 1A Emerald City League contest.
Helen Bouscarren and Lucy Bechtol were Overlakes new No. 1 doubles combo and combined for a 6-1, 6-4 win against the Bellevue-based school.
No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were both shortened due to snow and lightning. But Catherine Jessen and Nikki Reynolds won the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-3, while Diana Toma and Jennifer Patterson led No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 4-1, before the lightning started.
Julia Goncharenko (6-0, 6-3) and Stephanie Roush (6-1, 6-1) both breezed through their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.
Conway leads Bear Creek golf
Reigning 2B state girls golf champion Sydney Conway scored 25 points and her playing partner Carolyn Heine scored 23 as Bear Creek defeated Forest Ridge 72-35 in a SeaTac 2B match at Trilogy Golf Club on Wednesday.
Kalie Worman finished fourth with a 16 for the Grizzlies.
Overlake boys golf falls short
Overlakes Alec Pakzad won medalist honors, but the Owls fell just short against Bellevue Christian 168-170 in a 1A Emerald City League boys golf match at Overlake Country Club on Monday.
Pakzad, a junior, shot a 2-over par 37, while freshman Reid Frederickson had the second best score of the match with a 38.
But Bellevue Christians consistency with five golfers between 40-43 was too much for Overlake, who had four between 47-50.
Redmond soccer settles for tie
Nick Funaro scored a goal in the 45th minute as the Redmond boys soccer team tied Woodinville 1-1 in a nonleague match on Tuesday.
Danny Gallagher assisted on the Funaro goal which was equaled in the 60th minute by Woodinvilles Spencer Hoggart.
Boys soccer games are nonleague during early April, which includes spring break.
Redmond and Woodinville are both 2-1 in 4A Kingco play, while Redmond is 4-1-1 overall and Woodinville is 3-1-1.
Overlake lacrosse takes down EC
Kate Stinson and Sarah Stewart led the way as Overlake defeated Eastside Catholic 12-5 in a Varsity B girls lacrosse match on Tuesday. Stinson, who also stars on the soccer team, scored a game-high four goals, while Stewart added three goals and an assist. Allison Havran and Emily Warden each had two assists, with Havran adding a goal. Overlake goalie Kelly Roper stopped nine of 14 shots.
Overlake, coached by Sue Haviland, is 4-1 on the season and is tied for first in Varsity B with eight points.
