Overlake’s Goncharenko, Wilkes each finish second

Overlake had a pair of talented singles players finished second at last weekend’s Class 1A state tennis tournament at the Yakima Tennis Center.

Junior Julie Goncharenko won her first three matches in straight sets before falling to Sasha Carter of Tacoma’s Annie Wright School in the championship match 6-2, 6-3.

It was Goncharenko’s second consecutive runnerup finish at the state tournament.

On the boys’ side, senior Keith Wilkes remained undefeated until the finals, where he was outmatched by defending champion Tyson McGuffin of Chelan 6-0, 6-0.

It was Wilkes’ first trip to the state tournament.
