Cara Linnenkohl of Redmond’s Bear Creek School won the silver medal in the junior women’s single sculls on Saturday at the 2008 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Linz, Austria.

Linnenkohl, who rows for Seattle’s Lake Union Crew, overcame a start that left her in fifth place after just 500 meters and 5.1 seconds behind the leader Carina Baer of Germany.

By the half-way mark of the 2,000 meter race, with Baer still leading the field, Linnenkhol had fought her way into contention for a medal, rowing through second-place Marcela Milosevic, third-place Mihaela Petrila of Romania and fourth-place Alexandra Hagen of Austria.

Linnenkhol held onto the second spot through the finish, taking the silver with a time of 7:58.89. Baer won the gold in 7:50.76. Tale Gjoertz or Norway took the bronze in 8:02.09. Petrila, Hagen and Milosevic rounded-out the field.

Over 900 competitors from 55 nations are competing at this year’s championships. The regatta course was built on the Danube River in 1972 and has since played host to a variety of international rowing competitions, including the 1998 FISA World Junior Championships.
