Prep Report - Poplawski powers Owls past Eagles

Senior Danny Poplawski bounced back from a tough performance last week and led the Overlake boys basketball team to its first win of the season Tuesday night at The Overlake School.

Poplawski, a 6-foot-3 forward, poured in 27 points as the Owls flew past the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles, 70-55, in a nonleague contest.

With the win, the Owls improved to 1-2 on the season.

Poplawksi scored just six points in last Saturday’s 61-50 loss to Bear Creek. In the Owls’ season-opening loss to Darrington, Poplawski scored 28 points.

Chandler Hire, a 6-2 senior forward, broke out against the Eagles, scoring 20 points. Hire had scored a combined two points in the Owls’ first two games.

The game against Evergreen Lutheran started out close as the team battled to a 20-20 tie after the first quarter, but the Owls outscored the Eagles, 30-18, over the second and third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Overlake girls handle Forest Ridge, 54-31

The Overlake girls team took care of the Forest Ridge Ravens, 54-31, in a home Emerald City League opener Monday night.

Sophomore guard Meggie Howell scored a season-high 16 for the Owls and Alex MacKenzie, a senior forward, added 14 as the Owls improved to 2-1.

The Owls trailed 10-6 after the first quarter, then they caught fire, outscoring the Ravens, 48-21 over the final three quarters.

Bear Creek girls lose another heartbreaker

The Bear Creek girls dropped another close one Tuesday night, this time to the Yeshiva 613s, 46-45, in a nonleague game.

Junior guard Megan Cheever led the Grizzlies with 14 points and junior post Tajel Mehta scored in the double figures for the third straight finishing with 12 points. Madelyn Magee chipped in with 10.

Bear Creek was leading 38-33 after three quarters but was held to just seven points in the fourth quarter as the 613s rallied for the win.

The Grizzlies (0-3) have lost their three games by a combined eight points this season.
