Marina Giloi of Redmond among four students to receive scholarships from Eastside Republican Club

Marina Giloi of Redmond is among four students to win the Eastside Republican Club’s (ERC) 2012 Scholarship Essay contest.

Giloi, who attends Claremont McKenna College in California, and University of Washington student and Sammamish resident Patrick Leake received $375.

Corbin Poppe a student at Auburn Mountainview High School who plans to attend Washington State University, received $1,000 and Bellevue resident and Sammamish High School student Lia Ludlam, who will attend Brigham Young University received $750.

The scholarships will be presented on Tuesday, May 1 at the club’s monthly meeting at the VFW Post 2995 conference hall at 4330 148th Ave. N.E. in Redmond.

Applicants for the ERC scholarship essay program were required to submit an essay of up to 500 words on the topic “Why do free markets work? What should the President do to spur economic growth?” They were also required to live in King County or attend a public, private or home school in King County and be high school seniors graduating in 2012 or freshmen or sophomores in an accredited college or university. Winners were selected by a committee of judges made up of members of the board of directors of ERC.
