Redmond’s NE 36th Street Bridge receives national award

The City of Redmond’s Northeast 36th Street Bridge has recently been named 2012 National Public Works Project of the Year for all transportation projects costing between $25 million and $75 million dollars in the United States by the American Public Works Association (APWA).
Aspects cited by the APWA include the use of outstanding construction management and techniques including innovative and creative design and safety features, regard for environmental impacts and concerns, completion of the project on time and within budget and effective communications relations before, during and after construction.
Completed in December 2010 at a cost of $30 million dollars, the bridge spans State Route 520, connecting the Overlake neighborhood including the Microsoft Corp. campus on the south side to major arterials on the north side. Construction began spring 2009, with major funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project was a partnership between the city and Microsoft and includes one through-lane in each direction, bike lanes, sidewalks and direct connections to the SR-520 trail. It also accommodates the future Sound Transit Link Light Rail alignment.
The project received earlier recognition from a variety of agencies including: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) 2011 Outstanding Achievement – Best City Project; American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) 2011 Silver Award in Engineering Excellence; and the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association (WACA) 2012 First Place Excellence in Concrete Construction – Technical Merit.
The National Public Works Project of the Year Award will be presented at the APWA national conference to be held in August in Anaheim, Calif.
