Redmond High School senior Katie Lord won her third straight high jump gold medal at the District 1/2 state qualifying track and field meet last week at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
Lord won the high jump district title with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.
Lord will now be shooting for the gold at this week’s Class 4A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The three-day meet starts Thursday and concludes Saturday. Lord won the state silver medal last year with a leap of 5-5.
Lord wasn’t the Mustangs’ only district champion as senior Jessica Kinssies captured her first district title in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 40 feet, 10 inches. That mark breaks her own school record of 40-3 that she set at the Kingco 4A meet earlier this month.
Redmond sophomore Kelsey Dunn also qualified for state in the 3,200-meter race, placing fifth at the district meet with a time of 11 minutes, 8 seconds. In addition, the Mustangs’ 400 relay team — featuring Kelly Walls, Olivia Fox, Mandy Rusch and Maria Eckmann — punched a ticket to state, placing fourth in a time of 50.29 seconds. Teammates Joy Zhang and Aliya Steiner will also go to state as the 400 relay alternates.
For the boys’ team, Johnathan Stevens will run at state in the 1,600 and the 3,200 after placing third in both events at the district meet. Senior Gabe Williams will join Stevens at state after placing fourth in the javelin at the district meet with a throw of 167-0.
