For the second year in a row, Redmond’s 11-year-old all-star softball team is headed to the Little League state tournament, beginning July 13 at Kirkland’s Everest Field. The team clinched the District 9 championship on Tuesday night with a 15-3 victory over Eastlake.
Earning back-to-back district titles, Redmond swept the tournament again, this year racking up a total of 45 combined runs to its opponents’ six. Several girls on the 2013 roster were also on the 2012 team.
At state, the winning teams from each district will face off in a double-elimination bracket, aiming for a berth in the championship game on July 18.
As for its expectations at this year’s state tournament, manager Jeff Cummings says the team’s goal is “to progress farther in the bracket than last year, with strong hitting, fielding and pitching.” Cummings adds, “I look forward to seeing just how good this team is, and what we are capable of accomplishing.”
Prior to its first state game, the team plans to participate in the Derby Days Grand Parade, cool off in Lake Sammamish and spend several hours every day on the practice field. The team will play its first state game at 10 a.m. on July 14.
The local all-star team features players from Redmond North and West Little Leagues.
