Marchione declares Sunday Women’s Equality Day, honors anniversary of 19th Amendment

City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione has declared Sunday Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.
There will be a celebration that day at the Redmond Library at 15990 N.E. 85th from 1-3 p.m. The event will be hosted by local community group Eastside Democratic Women and feature a panel discussion with women leaders and candidates from across the region, including Marcie Maxwell, senior education policy adviser to the governor; Doreen Marchione, former Redmond mayor and current Kirkland City Council member; State Rep. Jessyn Farrell; Bellevue School board candidate My-Linh Thai; and King County Council candidate Shari Song.
“Our goal is to create a community-building event that inspires more women to participate at every level of the political process,” said Elizabeth Canning, chair of Eastside Democratic Women. “We have an incredible history of women in politics here in Washington State and we want to build on that legacy.”
The celebration will begin with a public reading of the mayor’s proclamation. Following the opening proclamation, keynote speaker Marilyn Watkins, policy director for The Economic Opportunity Institute will talk about ways to empower women through building the economy.
This year’s panel discussion will focus on balancing parenting with public service and the ways in which becoming a parent often inspires and creates challenges for women in public life. A political information fair featuring a wide range of organizations and campaigns will follow the discussion, including Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest, Fuse Washington and Washington Public Campaigns.
