Farms for Life celebrates another successful year

Volunteers from Farms for Life and representatives of local social service agencies gathered at the Root Connection Farm in Woodinville last month to celebrate the final produce distribution of the year.

Agency reps counted out lettuce, beets, carrots, squash, greens and other veggies — all grown by local farmers. The tasty produce soon would be on the plates of people in need.

Founded by Claire Thomas and a group of Root Connection Farm members in 2009, Farms for Life is a nonprofit agency that buys fruits and vegetables from local farmers at discounted prices and donates them to agencies that serve people in need.

This year, Farms for Life purchased and donated almost $40,000 worth of local produce —more than 14,500 pounds — enough to provide 60,000 servings of fresh vegetables.

Farms for Life helps support eight small, local farms and six community feeding programs/housing agencies, including FareStart, Plymouth Housing and the Northshore Community Kitchen.
