Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students who take the ACT, a standardized test used in college admissions, are more likely to meet college readiness standards than other students in Washington or nationwide.

More LWSD students score high enough on each of the four ACT tests (English, math, reading and science) to meet the college readiness benchmark that ACT has set.

Nationally, only 28 percent of students met this standard for all four subjects and 39 percent met it statewide. In LWSD, 63 percent of the students who took the ACT reached all four standards. That is four percent more than in 2014 for LWSD students.

“These ACT scores are one more measure that confirms that our students are working hard to prepare for college,” said LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce. “These results show that more of our students are leaving the district ready for college-level work.”

The number of students taking the ACT continues to rise in LWSD. In 2015, 512 students took the ACT. That is an increase of 38 students over last year and 62 more than in 2013.

The district’s average composite score, summarizing performance on all four subjects, rose from 25.7 to 25.9 from 2014 to 2015. That is the third straight year of increasing scores. State composite scores decreased from 23.0 to 22.4 from 2014 to 2015. The national average stayed the same at 21.0.

LWSD’s average ACT reading score increased from 25.7 in 2014 to 26.3 in 2015. State scores declined from 23.4 in 2014 to 22.7 in 2015. National scores saw a slight increase from 21.3 in 2014 to 21.4 in 2015.

Average scores for LWSD students rose in science, from 25.2 in 2014 to 25.5 in 2015. LWSD scores have risen every year for the last five years, from 24.7 in 2011 to 25.2 in 2015. State scores decreased this year from 22.7 in 2014 to 22.4 in 2015. National scores rose from 20.8 in 2014 to 20.9 in 2015.

The average ACT English score for LWSD saw a slight increase from 25.5 in 2014 to 25.6 in 2015. State scores declined from 22.3 in 2014 to 21.5 in 2015. National scores increased from 20.3 in 2014 to 20.4 in 2015.

Average ACT math scores stayed flat for LWSD at 25.8 from 2014 to 2015, while state and national scores in this subject declined. State scores declined from 23.3 in 2014 to 22.4 in 2015. National scores saw a small decline from 20.9 in 2014 to 20.8 in 2015.
