Confounded by roadwork on 166th Avenue Northeast | Letter

Every day, I take 166th Avenue Northeast down Education Hill and take a right on Northeast 85th Street to get to work.

Every day, I take 166th Avenue Northeast down Education Hill and take a right on Northeast 85th Street to get to work.

I am confounded by the recent roadwork on 166th at this particular turn. I have no problem with the bike lane down the hill. What does make me incredibly frustrated is the right turn from 166th on to 85th. The right-turn lane is not wide enough to pull into without blocking the bike lane entirely. As you go down the hill, the bike lane continues through the light, but anyone turning right has to get into the bike lane and effectively block it all the way to the turn, or wait behind the bikes until they are all past the turn.

This is a ridiculous situation. The turn lane should be a full-sized lane. There is no other turn in Redmond that I am aware of where the right-turn lane is less than half the size it should be. Who on the planning commission decided a half-size turn lane was acceptable? It makes no sense.

Once on 85th, you will find a right-turn lane as you turn onto 164th Avenue Northeast. The bike lane breaks up so that the bike and driver can share the lane to make the right turn. This makes so much more sense.

With all the money that the city throws into the neverending roadwork on 166th, it seems to me they ought to be able to do it right.
