On Thursday evening, seventh-grader Musfirah Khan was named winner of the Stella Schola Middle School spelling bee winner.

Khan was one of six students to participate in the bee.

The remaining participants were classroom winners and runners up: sixth-grader Lauryn Watanabe, seventh-graders Mehr Luthra and Varshan Muhunthan and eighth-graders Bella Spring and Spencer Boeh.

Spring was the runner-up in the bee.

Serving as judges were local writer Jamie Gower and Stella Schola Headmistress Brigitte Tennis.

Gower, graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, has worked in the Silicon Valley and the Seattle area as a technical writer, instructional designer, project manager as well as performing as a standup comedian and authoring several staged radio plays for local theaters. Tennis is the founder and headmistress of Stella Schola.

Erin Bowser, principal of Stella Schola Middle School, served as the pronouncer. Bowser has a degree in mathematics and a master’s in teaching from Seattle University.

Musfirah will represent Stella Schola at the 2015 Regional Bee for King and Snohomish counties in March.
