Redmond High’s Marshall and Petit are headed to Gordon, Dartmouth

Monet Marshall and Elise Petit displayed their talent on strong Redmond High soccer and volleyball squads, respectively, this fall.

They’re proud of their teams’ accomplishments in making it to the postseason. Individually, the senior girls are ready to take their skills to the college tier. On Wednesday, the athletes were recognized in the Redmond High Career Center for committing to play at Gordon College and Dartmouth College. Family members, teammates and coaches were on hand to congratulate the Mustangs.

Marshall committed to play at Gordon in Wenham, Mass. in July and said she’s excited to take the next step in her soccer career and in life.

“I think all my hard work has paid off and I’m just really grateful for that,” she said, adding about Gordon’s squad, “Coach and teammates are really encouraging and I know they’re gonna push me to that next level.”

Marshall said finding a small, Christian college like Gordon was important in her search. She’ll study bio-chemistry with the hopes of moving into the medicine realm.

On the pitch for the Mustangs (9-6-3 overall) this season, the defender was a 3A KingCo honorable mention and helped lead her team into the second round of the league playoffs.

Looking back on the season, she said, “It was bittersweet, because it was my senior year, but I had a ton of fun. (It was) a tough way to go out with PKs versus Mercer Island. We really bonded as a team, and I felt like I got to improve more and more and I’ve still got club season left to go for Crossfire Premier.”

Petit provided a ton of firepower from her outside hitter position for Redmond this season and she’ll bring that blistering armswing to Dartmouth in Hanover, NH.

She’s familiar with the program because two of her former Sudden Impact Volleyball club teammates from Mercer Island are on the Dartmouth squad.

“There’s a new coach, the program’s kind of on the up and it’s looking like they could win the Ivy League championship in the next couple years, and that’s something I really wanna be a part of,” Petit, 6-foot-1, said.

Petit compiled a stellar season for Redmond (14-7 overall): She was a 3A KingCo first-teamer, an all-scholar senior and an offensive/defensive force, especially during the 3A Sea King District playoffs where she amassed 73 kills and 63 digs in four games.

“On that last day, everyone played their hardest,” said Petit, who was bummed that her team didn’t make state. “It was obvious that everyone was really invested in this team and I think that was a key part. The success that we did have was really rewarding.”

Petit — who wants to study science at Dartmouth — said the Mustangs have persevered in getting the volleyball program off the ground. It was hard work and it was a big deal to succeed.
