Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” a perennially popular story about the game of love among the British upper classes at the close of the 18th century, will be brought to life in this original stage adaptation and performed by The Bear Creek School students this Friday and Saturday. Showtimes are 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days.
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are the parents of five daughters living comfortably within their means but well short of rich. They are looking for suitable husbands for their girls and are encouraged to learn that an eligible young bachelor from a wealthy family, Charles Bingley, has moved into a nearby estate.
Eager to see if a match can be made, the Bennets bring their daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia to a ball thrown by their new neighbor to see if sparks will fly. Jane seems to like Mr. Bingley and he appears to feel the same, but Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bingley’s egocentric best friend. Lydia is infatuated with military man Lt. Wickham. Elizabeth’s best friend, Charlotte, finds herself courted by Mr. Collins, an arrogant man of the cloth whose ego makes him the object of ridicule.
Fate causes Elizabeth and Darcy to frequently cross paths, and while they do not care for one another, they cannot stop thinking about each other. The three main antagonists appear in the roles of Caroline Bingley, who has designs on snagging Mr. Darcy for herself and, in Lady De Bourgh and her daughter Anne, who have Mr. Darcy in their sights, as well. As the story progresses, we wonder what, if anything, will bring Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy together.
