Every year, IronTribe Fitness gyms across the country hold events to raise money to help people in other parts of the world access clean water.

And for the first time, the IronTribe at 8451 164th Ave. N.E., Suite 100 in downtown Redmond will be part of that Workout for Water effort. The event will be at 9 a.m. on Nov. 19.

“Anybody can come work out with us that day,” said owner Amy Lewallen about the gym being open to non-members for the event.

While the workouts for the day have not been unveiled, she said they will have team workouts for groups of two or four, adding that the class will be accessible for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Lewallen said participants can come next week with their teams already formed or create teams with others upon arrival.

The cost of the event is $50 for the workout and a T-shirt. Lewallen said if people just want a T-shirt without the workout, it is $25. In addition, she said if people just want to donate to the cause, they can do so online at www.workoutfor water.com/event/seattle.

According to an IronTribe press release, Workout for Water is an awareness campaign started by one of the co-founders of Neverthirst, Forrest Walden, in 2009. All of the proceeds from Workout for Water benefit Neverthirst, whose goal is to bring clean drinking water to villages throughout India, Cambodia, Nepal, Chad, South Sudan and Sudan.

The press release states that more than 660 million people around the world lack access to safe drinking water. In addition, the World Health Organization estimates that 361,000 children younger than 5 die every year from preventable waterborne illnesses.

Over the past several years, Neverthirst has completed more than 5,500 water projects serving more than 398,000 people with access to clean water, the release states.

Lewallen said the proceeds from the Redmond event will go toward building a well in India. The goal is to raise $3,000. As of Thursday, the event has raised $1,950. In addition, IronTribe locations throughout the country have raised more than $650,000 so far this year through the Workout for Water campaign.

With Workout for Water, Lewallen said it will be good for people to come together for a big global cause and that there are bigger issues outside of this country. She said it is easy to get myopic about what is happening in this country, referring to the presidential election results, but there are others who are a lot worse off than those in the United States.
