People affected by fires need our donations | Editorial

Over the weekend, we saw smoke from the wildfires in our state put an eerie haze over the Seattle area.

It was a sobering reminder that people are suffering and need our help. These are our fellow citizens, firefighters and business owners that are in need.

If you can dig into your pockets and donate to those affected by the fires in north central Washington, it would help them greatly. Maybe get the word out around the workplace, ballfield or the neighborhood about making donations.

This week, a fellow community newspaper publisher reached out to us with ways to help: “Cash (or credit) donations are extremely important, both to give the nonprofit agencies on the ground the flexibility to get just what’s needed, and to let them support local businesses who are likewise walking along the brink of survival.”

Here’s some places to donate:

• Visit the Okanogan County Community Action Council website, www.occac.com. All funds donated go to disaster relief.

• Regional support, includes Okanogan and Chelan counties: Community Foundation of North Central Washington website, www.cfncw.org. Look for “Community Fund” options.

• Chelan Valley Hope, a nonprofit community service organization based in Chelan, is managing a fund for people who were burned out of their homes. Web link: http://givenaked.org/

• Fund for the firefighters who were killed or injured in the Methow Valley: www.Gofundme.com/methowfirefighters.

• Aid for injured or homeless livestock: Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office has an Emergency Animal Response Services Team, providing shelters and food. Checks only, to Okanogan County Sheriff, attn Deputy Yarnell, 123 N. 5th Ave, Room 200, Okanogan WA 98840. Memo line must say “Animal Relief/Rescue.”

• Volunteers: The DNR is still looking for qualified volunteers. See information at this link: www.dnr.wa.gov/wildfirevolunteer.

Spread the word. Thanks.
