More than 60 volunteers converged at the Old Fire House Teen Center (OFH) in Redmond last Saturday for the Just Garden “Spring into Bed” garden planter build.
There were 11 Redmond sites part of the event which included, Redmond Elementary School, YWCA and the Redmond Senior Center in addition to the OFH. Volunteers prepared the ground, built raised beds, filled planters, planted starts and shared in the community building event. Volunteers of all ages helped in the project and had a varied level of skills from never having held a hammer or planted a garden to seasoned veterans who helped to guide the process.
The Just Garden project was supported by the City of Redmond and Just Garden staff worked with city staff and volunteers to make this happen.
“I just appreciate the great community support for this project,” said City of Redmond teen program administrator Ken Wong. “They built the beds and had a great time getting to know each other.”
The Just Garden Project is a program of Seattle Tilth, which focuses on building a just food system and a culture of gardening for all people. Since 2010, the Just Garden Project has built more than 70 gardens — feeding more than 2,000 people fresh, local, organic food.
The program builds subsidized food gardens for low-income families in their homes and community centers.
