The Redmond High girls’ golf team polished off an eight-stroke 424-432 victory over their nearest rival, Newport, in the 4A Kingco Medalist Tournament at Mount Si Golf Course Wednesday.
Senior Kelly Kennewick medaled with a 5-over-par 77, followed by Keira O’Hearn (80, 3rd place), Makayla Walker (85, 5th place), Casie Helgeson (90, 10th place), Stephanie Schoeppel (93, 15th place) and Carley Kalina (94, 17th place).
The win give the Mustangs five straight regular season and Kingco tournament titles to go along with a perfect 50-0 mark in league play during that five-year span.
Play continues today with the 36-hole District tournament, where the top 12 finishers will earn automatic berths to the state tournament at Downriver Golf Course in Spokane on May 24 and 25.
Last Monday, Redmond responded to the pressure of playing for the 4A Kingco League Championship and their 85-match win streak against a star-studded Newport team, defeating the Knights 210-216.
Senior captain Alicia Bies rose to the occasion, medaling for the first time in her final league match with a 4-over-par 40, followed by Kelly Kennewick’s 41.
Keira O’Hearn, last year’s medalist at Newcastle, shot 42, Stephanie Schoeppel carded 43 and Makayla Walker and Peyton Halstead tied for the final scoring spot with 44.
Low for Newport was state returner Hannah Christian and sophomore Isabel Chien with 42.
Redmond’s team score of 210 is the all-time record for lowest team score by any girls’ golf team at Newcastle.
Redmond boys’ track squad wins academic championship
The Redmond High School boys’ track team won the 4A Academic State Championship, reserved for the team with the highest cumulative GPA for varsity participants at the semester.
The 23 members of the boys’ team had an average 3.625 GPA to take the title and will be recognized at the state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School, which takes place May 26-28.
“It is a testament not only to the athletes, but to the coaching staff, which is made up of educators,” wrote Redmond Athletic Director John Appelgate in an e-mail. “David Peabody gets credit as the head boys’ coach, but he doesn’t work alone. Denis Villeneuve is the head girls’ coach, but works with the male athletes as well, as do Kate Atvars, Jason Palmer, Heather Chadwick and Paul Mullen.”
The boys’ and girls’ teams will be participating today in the 4A Kingco League meet, starting at 3:30 p.m. at Juanita High School.
Liberty downs Redmond in boys’ lacrosse
In a Division II boys’ lacrosse battle at Liberty High in Renton, Collin Ross of the Patriots scored four of his team’s five goals to hand Redmond a 5-2 loss on Tuesday night.
For Redmond, Alex Armintrout netted both goals and Nico Shewey made 11 saves in goal in one of the lowest-scoring games of the season.
With the loss, Redmond concluded its season in third place in the Evergreen Conference with a 8-5-0 league record.
