Bear Creek places at Math is Cool competition, advances to state next month

The Bear Creek School’s grades 9-10 math team placed first in Division II at the Seattle Region High School Math Is Cool competition.

The competition was held Nov. 1 at Tahoma High School in Covington.

The Bear Creek team also scored high enough to place second in Division 1B.

The school’s grades 11-12 team placed first in Division II, scoring high enough to also finish first in Division 1B and fifth in Division 1A.

Both teams have been invited to the Math Is Cool Masters state-wide competition, and the grades 11-12 will compete in the top-8 Elite Division. Math Is Cool Masters will be held on Dec. 6 at Moses Lake High School.

Out of hundreds of individual competitors, junior Caleb Ji tied for first overall, but came away with second place after a tiebreaker. Senior James Choi finished in 16th place overall.
