Swerve Robotics Club hosted a youth robotics open house at the Redmond Library on April 6.
The open house was held in honor of National Robotics Week, a celebration of the science and technology behind robots. Local robotics teams, robot enthusiasts and professionals were on hand to display and talk about their robots and people of all ages came from as far away as Vancouver, Wash. to participate in the event, which drew about 300 people.
Robots on display included a LEGO robot that solved a Rubik’s Cube, a tiny quadrocopter flying overhead and a small robotic “sphero” ball navigating the room. There were also 3-D printers present as well as a LEGO robot climbing a tether.
Also attending the event were students from Redmond-based Exothermic Robotics Club, who shared their drivable VEX robots with the crowds. There were also displays and demonstrations from the local FIRST LEGO League teams and FIRST Tech Challenge teams (www.firstwa.org).
Representatives from DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond also offered information about their summer camps and a resource table displayed materials about local robotics programs and other robotics-related opportunities in the Puget Sound region.
