On July 25 and 26, more than 20,000 people attended the sixth annual Ananda Mela Joyful Festival of India.

Among the main visual attractions was a display on the Indian epic Ramayana, telling the story of King Rama.

Dance and music performances entertained audiences on two stages.

On Saturday evening, MC Yogi from San Francisco and DJ Drez from Los Angeles teamed up to get the audience dancing with a blend of electronic music and hip-hop with an Indian twist.

Festival veterans Delhi 2 Dublin took the stage Sunday evening to give a high-energy performance of their signature fusion of Bhangra, Celtic music, dub reggae and electronica. Their concert featured several tracks from their upcoming new album, interspersed with familiar classics from earlier albums.

In addition, the popular Aloha Bhangra dance contest was held during Delhi 2 Dublin’s concert, with many prizes given away to dancers among the audience. The first prize of a free vacation to Hawaii for two went to a contestant from Portland, Ore.

Other participatory events included a cooking contest, sari tying, henna and activities for children.

An array of food booths tempted visitors with a wide variety of preparations, including well-known dishes from all parts of India, as well as popular items from Indo-Chinese fusion cuisine.

“Ananda Mela has been steadily growing since its launch in 2010,” said Latha Sambamurti, the festival’s artistic director. “It has become the largest arts-and-culture event in Redmond and the largest Indian festival in the Northwest. Our vision is to make Ananda Mela a premier Indian event in all of the United States.”

This year’s Ananda Mela received grant support from 4Culture and ExperienceRedmond.com.
