Local retiree rolls out the WelcomeMat

Within 30 to 90 days of relocating, new movers would most likely receive an envelope labeled, “welcome” in their mailbox, packaged with gift certificates and discounted coupons.

Within 30 to 90 days of relocating, new movers would most likely receive an envelope labeled, “welcome” in their mailbox, packaged with gift certificates and discounted coupons.

This direct-mail bundle stands as the rising business WelcomeMat’s strategy to link new residents with local businesses. After years of working in the municipal government, Wayne Sepolen, a Redmond-based retiree, took this break as a chance to explore his vision by becoming a franchise owner.

When he was employed at a large bureaucracy, Sepolen often found it hard to see the true value of his work. Sepolen dreamed of one day setting up a small business that could impact his community more directly.

“For some time I have wanted to try a different career approach,” he said. “So after my daughter finished and was succeeding in her career, I began looking into franchising as a way to start a small business.”

Sepolen turned to WelcomeMat, a marketing strategies and technology company. Since its franchise began two years ago, WelcomeMat already extended more than 25 companies across the country, demonstrating the appeal of connecting new residents with existing cliental stores and shops.

Sepolen’s desire to help newcomers to assimilate and his passion for local businesses’ growth drives him to become a businessperson.

“I hope (new residents) are relieved that businesses in their new neighborhood are thoughtful enough to provide complimentary items,” said Sepolen.

The caring gesture can reduce the stress of relocating, he added.

While the gift packages are a business strategy to attract potential customers, they also act as welcoming gestures. Coupons and gift certificates introduce new movers to explore their local stores and services, thereby benefiting the region as a whole.

“I’m excited to be able to impact the area in which I have lived for over 35 years,” said Sepolen.
