Maris wins award at National History Day

Nathan Maris of Redmond received a special award from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, in honor of his documentary project, “The Battle of Wake Island: The Conflict and Compromise of the Marine Credo,” at the National History Day competition, held June 15-19 at the University of Maryland.

This prize is awarded to an outstanding entry in either the junior or senior division, that demonstrates an appreciation of Marine Corps history.

The project focused on a World War II battle and ensuing incarceration in Japanese POW camps.

Maris is an eighth grade student at the International Community School, a Choice school in the Lake Washington School District.

Juvrud named to George Fox dean’s list

Joshua C. Juvrud of Redmond has been named to the George Fox University dean’s list for the 2008 spring semester.

A junior majoring in psychology and sociology, he is the son of Todd and Julie Juvrud.

To be included on the academic honor roll, a student must earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher while taking at least 12 graded credit hours of classes.

George Fox University is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university.

More than 3,200 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem and Redmond, Ore. and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees.

ESL classes offered at LWTC

The Redmond branch of Lake Washington Technical College, 6505 176th Ave. NE, is offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Day and evening classes at all levels are available. Cost is $25 per quarter or free to low-income residents.

Summer quarter begins July 7 and fall quarter begins September 22.

The campus is behind Whole Foods at the East entrance of Marymoor Park.
