Cute little rabbit or bunny vampire?: ‘Bunnicula’ opens Oct. 30 at SecondStory Repertory

SecondStory Repertory (SSR) opens its 11th season of Children’s Theatre with an adaptation of the popular book “Bunnicula,” written by James Howe and adapted for the stage by Jon Klein, with music composed by Chris Jeffries.

Opening night for “Bunnicula” is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 and the show runs through Nov. 15 with performances at 7 p.m. on Fridays and at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. All tickets are $9.

“Bunnicula” is a family-friendly musical running at 70 minutes, with no intermission. The show is recommended for school-aged children over the age of four.

Performances for families with children under the age of four will be held Sunday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.

Is Bunnicula a cute little rabbit – or a bunny vampire? Harold the Dog and Chester the Cat have their suspicions…after a series of strange events seem to show that the newest member of the Monroe family may just be a veggie vampire.

“Bunnicula” is the first departure from founding artistic director Stan Gill’s SPROUTS library of children’s shows since the theatre opened 10 years ago, and this is the first time that the company has incorporated puppetry into one of its children’s musicals.

“Bunnicula” is directed by James Lapan, with music direction by Jon Lutyens. The cast features Nick Edwards, Ellen Dessler, Doug Fahl, Heather Ward, Eric Villiers, Justin Huertas, and Rob Falk. The show is stage-managed by Kristin Calhoun, set design is by Tellier Killaby-Booth, lights by Rob Falk, sound design by Scott Branston, costumes by Laurie Roberts, and puppetry design by the award-winning Don Darryl Rivera.
