Ceramic artist Kelly Neu took her first ceramics class at Redmond’s Clay Studio in 2009.
She registered for the Parks and Recreation Beginning Pottery class, learned how to use the wheel and build pots by hand. She continued taking classes and discovered her passion for pottery. Neu has explored a variety of clay techniques over the years and currently incorporates drawing and painting into surface design on clay to make both functional and sculptural art.
“I enjoy working with clay and the many ways I can incorporate my love of drawing and painting into a final art piece. I translate aspects from nature and integrate them into my designs — either with sculptural elements or with surface design images,” said Neu.
Neu has studied with Clay Studio director Damien Grava for six years. In 2014, she became an instructor at the studio. There, Neu teaches both youth and adult clay classes, including pottery sampler and Pit Fire.
“Kelly has joined her love of painting and carving with ceramics, creating a unique decorative style,” said Grava. “Over this past year, Kelly has been teaching at Redmond Clay Studio, inspiring others to explore their creative paths.”
The Clay Studio is part of the Redmond Parks and Recreation Department programs and offers year-round classes for all ages. It is located on the first floor of the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center.
“The Redmond Clay Studio is a great place to be creative, and have other creative people to connect with and inspire each other,” said Neu. “I believe imagination and creativity are important as a means of self-expression. I continue to develop new ideas and designs in my ceramic art work.”
“Redmond Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts offers opportunities for people to explore and learn,” said Arts Coordinator Jessica Rubenacker. “Kelly is an example of someone who discovered her creative talent in the arts after taking an introductory art class offered through Redmond Parks and Recreation.”
Neu is now the owner of Kelly Neu Ceramics in Redmond, sells her pottery and sculpture at art fairs, and has won multiple awards. She recently participated in the 6th Annual Redmond Arts Festival at Redmond Town Center. Next month, she will show and sell her pieces at So Bazaar Market on Aug. 13, 20, and 27. So Bazaar Market, in partnership with Northwest Art Alliance, will be held from noon to 9:30 p.m. on the Redmond Central Connector, between 161st Avenue Northeast and Leary Way Northeast.
