Local Comcast employees give back to community

More than 70 volunteers from the Redmond area helped revitalize Friends of Youth campus in Kirkland.

On April 21, more than 70 Comcast employees from the Redmond area, along with their families, friends and community partners, participated in a volunteer project in partnership with Friends of Youth in Kirkland.

The local nonprofit organization provides emergency shelter and transitional housing services to help homeless youth attain personal growth and success.

The work was part of the 17th annual Comcast Cares Day, when Comcast employees around the world give back to their communities. More than half of all this year’s projects in Washington state directly supported those living without shelter or who are in transitional housing, including the work with FOY.

Comcast volunteers worked alongside FOY CEO Terry Pottmeyer and her staff to help beautify and revitalize the main campus and housing areas. Work included weeding and landscaping the grounds, planting more than 150 flowers, laying and spreading mulch and cleaning the interior of the emergency shelter and some of the vehicles they use for street outreach.

“More than 4,700 employees call Washington home, and giving back to our own communities means a lot to us,” Amy Lynch, regional vice president of Comcast’s Washington region, said in a press release. “This year we worked alongside our community partners to help ensure that people from all walks have access to the resources, services and technology that can help improve their quality of life.”

In addition to the improvements to the building and the grounds, volunteers also helped sort and organize clothing and hygiene products that were donated to the organization, which will directly benefit the homeless youth who are served by FOY.

“We’ve been lucky to work side-by-side with so many wonderful Comcast employees on Comcast Cares Day, employees who share our commitment to ensuring that all young people have access to what they need to succeed,” Pottmeyer stated in the release. “Comcast’s support has helped us maintain warm and welcoming homes for our youth, provide access to high-speed internet for youth in our care, and purchase technology to support our education program. We are grateful to have such a generous and committed partner in our work.”
