Local musicians hold virtual benefit concert for mental health

The stream-a-thon supports NAMI Eastside and nonprofit Hold Your Crown

Local musicians and nonprofits are coming together for one night to remind young people that they are not alone.

Over 15 Seattle local artists will be playing via a YouTube stream, from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 29, to as a virtual benefit event for nonprofits NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Eastside, and Hold Your Crown, a project founded by one of the streaming alt-rock bands King Youngblood that drives awareness for youth mental health, with an emphasis on de-stigmatization within communities of color and immigrant populations.

The “You Are Not Alone Stream-a-Thon” will air on the NAMI Eastside YouTube channel.

“This Coronavirus pandemic has brought a new appreciation for the isolation that many of our family members experience when dealing with mental health conditions,” NAMI Eastside Executive Director Michele Meaker stated in a press release. “Our loved ones have developed incredible strengths in the face of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. We have each gained some insight into what it means to be isolated. We admire even more the courage of our loved ones and have something to learn from them in these times.”

This night of music and inspiration will offer the opportunity to make a financial contribution to support the work of NAMI Eastside and Hold Your Crown. Special guests throughout the evening will include members of NAMI Eastside’s staff and members of the region’s music community who will share their own experiences around mental health.

“It is more important than ever for us to remove the stigma of mental illness and showcase all of the ways that all people impacted can get help,” Donna Lurie, President of the NAMI Eastside Board of Directors, stated in the release.
