Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a popular substance that can provide its users with a wide range of different benefits. Because many people need to use it daily, there are now many more options for CBD oil than there have been before.
Every single CBD brand says it offers high-quality, pure CBD oil, with some stating that they’re full-spectrum or completely organic. Not every CBD oil lives up to the claims they make, though.
Because of that, locating the right CBD oil for you can be challenging. We created this list to help people find the right product for themselves. Our research indicates that these are the best CBD oil products you can find in 2021.
The Best CBD Oils of 2021
We interviewed different manufacturers, studied lab results, and tested the CBD products below to rank them. We list the leading CBD oils to purchase in 2021.
Charlotte’s Web [official website] is a well-known CBD oil company. The company offers high-quality CBD products like oil, capsule, and gummies at a higher price than some of its other competitors. The products aren’t cheap, but Charlotte’s Web carved itself a niche towards the more expensive end of the market.
Charlotte’s Web is famous because it was one of the first companies to target its CBD products toward people with medical conditions. One of their most notable customers is a young girl named Charlotte with severe epilepsy, and the founders of the company named their famous strain after her.
Charlotte’s Web has a variety of different CBD oils that offer various wellness goals and dosages. Depending on what you want, you can find different starter kits, flavor sample packs, high-dose, and CBD oil that’s full-spectrum. Charlotte’s Web has quite a few different ones to try if you’re more concerned with flavors. Some of them include Mint Chocolate, Orange Blossom, Olive Oil, and Lemon Twist.
This company can be great for people even if they don’t have severe epilepsy. Charlotte’s Web states that their products can help manage stress, support calm, and focus, manage sleep cycles, recover from exercise-induced inflammation, and more.
Charlotte’s Web is the best brand you can buy for people who want to stick with well-known and trusted companies. If you don’t care that much about brand reputation, you may want to search for a cheaper alternative.
PopulumPopulum [official website] is pretty different from other CBD companies, and it advertises its ethical and high-quality CBD to differentiate itself from other brands. You can see that right away with their plain packaging and label.
Populum caters itself to the high-end market, and they charge more for high-quality products. Not all of their products are expensive, so even if you’re on a budget, you should be able to find something.
Populum caters itself to the luxury market, and they charge more for high-quality products. Not all of their products are expensive, so even if you’re on a budget, you should be able to find something.
CBD from Populum has a distinct orange flavor, meaning that it doesn’t come in many flavors as other brands do. However, you can purchase full-spectrum hemp oil from Populum in doses of 250 mg to 2,000 mg per bottle. That’s 8 mg to 66 mg per serving.
Populum makes its oil from full-spectrum, organic hemp plants grown in Colorado. Populum states that its CBD can alleviate stress, induce relaxation, and assist wellness.
Joy Organics [official website] has a line of full and broad-spectrum CBD tinctures, and it’s USDA Organic certified. Although many companies state they’re organic, very few are USDA approved.
Joy Organics’ lineup includes a few flavors, including Orange Bliss, Summer Lemon, and Tranquil Mint. If you prefer flavorless, you can buy the Unflavored CBD. There are also quite a few customization options, ranging from 30 mg to 75 mg per serving, meaning that a bottle will have anywhere from 900 mg to 2,250 mg of CBD.
Every oil from Joy Organics is lab tested and doesn’t contain any THC, meaning that you won’t experience a THC high. The brand itself is family-owned and operated, and it has a variety of options other than oil tinctures, including CBD for pets.
Rya Organics [official website] is a CBD brand from Cymbiotika, a natural health product company that offers various supplements, tinctures, oils, and more. Rya Organics is vegan, soy-free, gluten-free, and GLP-certified, so the products cater to a wide variety of different needs.
Some oils include other ingredients. For example, Nexus Relief for inflammation has turmeric, DHA, and EPA to make the formula more effective and better absorb into a person’s system.
Other than Nexus Relief for inflammation, Rya Organics also offers products to help induce sleep, relieve pain, reduce aging, and cleanse the skin. Rya Organics makes each product in the United States with organic ingredients.
These products are a bit pricier than some of the others on this list. If you know that you use a lot of CBD and want to order bulk, you can buy a subscription for a discount.
CBD American Shaman
CBD American Shaman [official website] is another incredibly well-known CBD oil company, and you can find its products in many locations throughout the US. Some products are water-soluble, and many are rich in terpenes. There are also extra-strong blends if you need something more effective, making it an excellent choice for people who want as many terpenes as possible.
The companies on this list make sure that customers can change the dose they buy, and CBD American Shaman is no different. You can choose different dosages and sizes, and you aren’t stuck choosing between just oils. There’s also topical lotions, capsules, flower, and edibles.
This company gets its CBD from farms in the US that are agriculturally responsible. With a unique cherry limeade flavor and a water-based formula, the company says it has more bioavailability and quicker absorption than other brands. That includes blends that are water-soluble, which aren’t technically oils.
Sol CBD [official website] has a line of various CBD oils, tinctures, capsules, and topical treatments. Some of these products target specific things, especially sleep. You can also get multiple strengths of CBD oil with this brand, including its signature 4,000 mg CBD tincture that starts at $289.
Sol CBD says that its oil boosts immune and brain health, protects the body, reduces inflammation, improves sleep quality, and lowers anxiety. Several studies help support Sol CBD’s claims.
Sol CBD combines MCT and CBD oil to assist absorption, and most of their products don’t have any flavoring. Instead of adding flavor, their products have a natural flavor that’s like green tea.
Most companies on this list use US hemp, but Sol CBD sources its hemp from the northern part of Europe. The company also uses CBD extracted through CO2 technology. As for prices, the cheapest product starts at $39.
CBDistillery [official website] sells CBD to customers from industrial hemp grown without GMOs and with natural, more sustainable farming techniques. The company ensures the quality using third-party labs to test the tinctures.
You can get the full-spectrum and 0% THC tinctures from 500 mg to 2,500 mg. According to the company, the oils help improve your wellbeing and are fast-acting and convenient.
There are also different formulas entirely for specific products. For example, the Relief + Relax formula has CBG and CBD in a ratio of 1:1, and Sleep has CBN and CBD in a ratio of 1:3. This company has unique combinations of cannabinoids that you won’t find from other brands, and it wants to set itself apart from other companies with its formulas.
Medterra [official website] makes its tinctures with both CBD and MCT oil created from coconuts. The company sources CBD oil from US hemp farmers. Third parties test each product before selling to ensure that they’re compliant with local laws.
You can purchase the oils with strengths of 500 mg, 1,000 mg, and 3,000 mg. They’re all free from THC and are each non-GMO.
This company also supplies different products for different needs. This includes the CBG + CBD Tincture, the Ultra Broad Spectrum, and the Full Spectrum Oil. Every full-spectrum oil from Medterra is full of cannabinoids like CBG, CBC, CBDV, and CBN, along with a few extra, naturally-occurring terpenes and cannabinoids.
FiveFive [official website] has an array of CBD gummies and oil tinctures, taking fewer shortcuts to redefine what full-spectrum CBD oil means. You can get their flagship tincture with 1,500 mg to 6,000 mg of CBD in every serving, which is one of the most potent formulas you can find.
Like full-spectrum oils from other companies, Five’s contains THC, CBD, CBC, CBN, and a few other terpenes and cannabinoids. The brand offers three different CBD oil flavors: Mint Chocolate, Citrus, and Lavender. As for THC, the products only have around 60 mg of THC per 1,500 mg bottle, which is around the same as full-spectrum oils from other companies.
Five combines CBD with organic MCT to increase absorption. If you’re concerned about where the flavoring comes from, Five uses naturally extracted flavors.
Zatural’s Broad Spectrum oils are affordable, and the company removes all THC for its broad spectrum blends. Like all the other companies, Zatural [official website] grows hemp with no herbicides or pesticides. The plant also comes from US farms, extracted using CO2 to separate the hemp and CBD oil.
The company offers many flavors, including Natural, Sweet Natural, Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemon Lime, and Cinnamon. It also gives customers some of the highest doses on the list, with bottles ranging anywhere from 300 mg to 12,000 mg of CBD. Because the 300 mg bottle is just under $30, it’s the most affordable option we listed.
cbdMD [official website] isn’t quite as well-known as some others on this list, but it offers a wide variety of flavors and products. You can get a variety of CBD tinctures, gummies, topical products, and capsules. For flavors, cbdMD offers customers flavors like mint, natural, orange, and berry.
Every oil the company offers is broad-spectrum with natural MCT oil and gives customers good quality products to help overall wellness. These CBD oils are full of terpenes, CBG, and CBN.
cbdMD’s CBD is industrial hemp grown in the US, and ISO-certified, third-party labs analyze each oil for quality. You can also adjust the size and strength, ranging from 30 mL to 60 mL and 300 mg to 7,500 mg.
Like a few other companies, Aspen Green [official website] has an organic certification from the USDA. The company grows its hemp in Colorado, and because it’s full-spectrum, Aspen Green doesn’t need to create CBD distillate or isolate for its products. It comes in three flavors – Original, Citrus, and Mint.
In addition, Aspen Green hemp is free from any parabens, toxins, phthalates, sulfates, or formaldehyde. However, many companies that get organic hemp in the US can make the same claims.
Aspen Green hemp must go through eight lab tests before release, testing for E. coli, terpenes, cannabinoids, heavy metals, salmonella, pesticides, bacteria yeast mold, mycotoxin, and VOC residual solvents. Aspen Green also uses QR codes on each label, which we appreciate. It makes it much easier to look at lab test results.
Receptra Naturals [official website] comes from Broomfield, Colorado, and sells customers formulas to assist with specific goals. That includes its lavender tincture to help with relaxation, total wellness CBD, and CBD turmeric.
Many use this brand to target various issues like inducing sleep, reducing inflammation, and calmness. The company claims it uses only organic and natural ingredients for every formula, including flavoring. You can get CBD oils flavored with natural MCT oil, passionflower, lavender, ginger, lime, and more.
Every Bloom Hemp [official website] product is certified organic by the USDA, and you can find tinctures, hemp oil, lotions, balms, and more. Some products, like the Calming, Digestive, and Recovery tinctures, target specific goals. You can also buy the typical full-spectrum CBD in various flavors.
Bloom Hemp has also added additional cannabinoids into its CBD oil. For example, the Essential Calming tincture contains 100 mg of CBN and 1,200 mg of CBD. Like most CBD brands, Bloom Hemp lets you alter your flavor and dosage options, too.
RE Botanicals [official website] also has a USDA Organic certification for their oils. This company has an organic hemp farm in South Carolina, where it processes and grows its products. Each oil is free from glyphosates and non-GMO.
Each oil from RE Botanicals are liquid tinctures that use MCT oil, and they’re simple to take. If you aren’t sure you want CBD oil, you can also try out their capsules and body oil.
These hemp formulas are a golden color and have a natural hemp taste. Other companies often use synthetic ingredients to affect the taste, but RE Botanicals only puts natural ingredients in their formulas. If you’re concerned about that, you don’t need to be.
Green Roads [official website] is a vast and well-known CBD company in America, and it’s one of the very few companies that actual pharmacists support. Laura Fuentes, a pharmacist, created the company, and she was even a licensed pharmacist for 25 years before starting the company.
She believed that CBD could change lives, and her vision made Green Roads the biggest American private CBD company. It’s now in more than 10,000 different locations throughout the country.
Green Roads sells full and broad spectrum blends that vary between 10 mg to 50 mg of CBD a serving, about 300 mg to 1,500 mg per bottle. As for flavors, you can pick one of three, which are Mint Breeze, Original, and Apple Kiwi Bliss.
Mana Artisan Botanics
Because it’s not quite as popular as other brands here, you might have never heard of Mana Artisan Botanics [official website]. However, it’s a decent CBD company with a few different flavors, and they all have a distinctly tropical, Hawaiian theme advertising the “Mana difference.”
Mana Artisan Botanics distinguishes itself because it commits to regenerative agriculture, local economy, and holistic health education. To do this, the company gets its CBD from either local farms or its own farm whenever it can. All the hemp Mana Artisan Botanics sources are from Hawaii.
Another feature that sets it apart is that it might be the first brand to offer a macadamia nut CBD flavor. Mana Artisan Botanics blends CBD oil with organic macadamia oil from Hawaii to create this formula.
Compared to a few other companies on this list, Just CBD [official website] is relatively new, having only started selling CBD oil online in 2017. In 2021, this brand provides customers with various CBD oils that start at $10 for a bottle.
The brand’s main CBD tinctures are the CBD Oil Tincture Hemp Seed and CBD Oil Tincture Coconut. All of Just CBD’s oil comes in doses between 50 mg to 5,000 mg, and the brand claims that they’re ideal for calming your body and mind. If you don’t want to purchase oil, Just CBD also offers gummies, capsules, and vape cartridges.
All of this company’s CBD comes from hemp grown domestically, and although it isn’t USDA certified organic, Just CBD claims it sources CBD from hemp that’s grown organically. Just CBD also tests every oil for purity and potency. If you’re concerned about the organic certification, you don’t need to be. Many CBD companies aren’t USDA-certified organic.
CBDFx [official website] provides customers with various CBD options, including edibles, oil, capsules, topicals, and CBD for pets. All the tinctures are created from CO2-extracted hemp oil that’s grown without GMOs and are entirely vegan. Like other companies we’ve discussed, CBDFx uses CBD oil and a carrier oil that’s ordinarily MCT or coconut oil to assist absorption.
The result of the oil combination is a consistent, high-quality CBD experience each time you use it. In addition, the company boosts its formula with other ingredients like coenzyme Q10 and curcumin. Some of this company’s oils also contain CBG and CBN.
CBDFx carries formulas targeted towards sleep, calmness, and overall wellness. The brand also has CBD for pets, including cats and small, medium, and large dogs. You can choose various strengths between 500 mg – 6,000 mg, and the tinctures start at $39.99.
CBDPure [official website] offers organic CBD oil from hemp plants in Washington and Colorado. Unlike some other brands on this list, CBDPure claims it provides “the most powerful and beneficial CBD available.” The brand uses third-party companies to test products, which many other highly rated CBD companies do.
While we’re not sure if that’s an accurate statement, we can say that CBDPure has various options. You can purchase hemp oil, softgels, cream, and oil for bets. The company’s flagship CBD oil contains 300 to 1,000 mg of full-spectrum CBD in a serving. Compared to other companies on this list, this CBD is reasonably priced at $30 to $80 for each bottle, depending on the dose.
How We Ranked The Best CBD Oils
Ranking CBD oils are sometimes tricky because every CBD company uses phrases like “organic,” “pure,” and “lab tested.” These terms imply different things for every company. Some are USDA certified organic, some are lab-tested, some have synthetic ingredients, and others have organic flavors. Some companies will use a combination.
After analyzing many top-rated oils, we narrowed down our list with these guidelines:
Lab Testing and Transparency
For CBD products, testing is crucial. Any reputable CBD company will publish its results upfront so that it’s easy for customers to locate good products. For this list, we prioritized oils that were tested using third-party and renowned labs. The best companies employ labs that are ISO 17025-compliant, and the worst will test their own products.
Despite many companies claiming to grow their hemp organically, very few get the certification from the USDA. The USDA certification isn’t easy for hemp producers to get, but we still preferred certified oils. It’s better when there are fewer herbicides, pesticides, and toxins in CBD oils.
Company Reputation and Team
While some CBD companies staff experts like pharmacists or doctors, others are little more than marketing brands. We looked at each company’s reputation for this list, including things like outreach, a medical advisory board, and the company’s overall transparency.
Most CBD companies will use fatty oils in their products, like MCT. A few others create water-based solutions. The highest-quality ingestible oils use MCT from coconuts, and chapter ones include MCT oil from other sources. The carrier oil affects the quality and absorption of CBD, so we considered the carrier for this ranking.
Most top-rated CBD brands are American, so they get hemp from American farmers; however, some excellent CBD companies look for hemp from Canada, Europe, or other areas. For this list, we preferred companies that were as transparent as possible with their growing location.
Many of the best CBD oils aren’t CBD isolates; instead, full-spectrum blends contain cannabinoids and terpenes with complementary effects. The best oils usually list their specific dosages of TCH, CBD, CBG, and any other ingredients.
We prioritized CBD oils that contain only CBD, but a few of the highest-ranking oils blend other ingredients, like turmeric, with CBD. As long as science backs up these ingredients, showing they support the target benefits, we added the oil to these rankings.
A few oils have limited flavor or dose options, but they don’t work for everyone. For that reason, we prioritized oils that had a variety of dosages, volumes, and flavors. Customization is always helpful.
Although a few people prefer flavored CBD, we selected companies that offered natural or organic flavors when possible. That’s because some cheaper CBD companies use artificial flavors with synthetic additives. However, we tried not to be too biased towards specific flavors, only ingredients because of flavor preferences. The best companies will use USDA-certified organic flavorings and avoid artificial additives.
Because of regulations from the FDA, CBD companies can’t advertise that CBD has specific health benefits. That means that brands can’t state CBD reduces cancer risk or cure mental or physical health problems. Still, a few CBD brands toe that line, suggesting that their products help with those issues instead of outright claiming it. We prioritized companies that were honest and complied with laws about health benefits.
Who Can Use CBD Oil?
People take CBD for many different reasons. Some studies say that CBD can help with the following:
- Seizures and epilepsy
- Pain relief
- Heart health
- General health and overall wellness
CBD is usually safe for people to use, but some experience adverse side effects. For that reason, discuss CBD with your doctor before you start taking it, especially if you’re breastfeeding, have certain medical conditions, are pregnant, or if you take supplements or medications. CBD can react negatively with various medicines. Many of these risks are the same ones you’ll find with OTC supplements, including keto pills.
Dosage of CBD Oil
Typically, you can get CBD oils with doses of 300 mg to 6,000 mg per bottle. That means that you can get anywhere from 5 mg to 200 mg per serving. The correct dosage for people depends on their desired benefits, intended use, body weight, their body’s chemistry, physiology, and metabolism.
There isn’t a set correct dose of CBD. It depends on the individual. Some people will feel all the positive aspects of CBD with a 5 mg dose, but others will need 200 mg to get similar effects.
Generally speaking, experts say to start with a small dose and increase frequency and dose over time. Take a small dose to begin, look at the effects, and see if you need to alter the dosage or frequency. Take your CBD four to six hours apart so that your body has enough time to absorb the CBD.
CBD oil doesn’t contain stimulants, so that you can take it any time of day. Many even take it before they go to bed so that it’s easier to fall asleep.
Also, how you take CBD will alter the dosage you need. If you use it sublingually, you’ll absorb more CBD than if you combine it with food or beverages.
CBD Oil Side Effects
In a 2011 study, scientists found out that people can tolerate higher CBD doses well, even over extended periods. In 2017, researchers updated the study and confirmed their previous results.
One study in 2019 found that CBD can cause damage to the liver of mice and affect medications. Still, most studies find that people tolerate CBD oil well. Keep in mind that the FDA doesn’t regulate any CBD oil products, so it’s up to you to pick the right supplements. Some companies are transparent about their ingredients and lab testing, and others aren’t.
Overall, though, CBD side effects aren’t common, even with higher doses. Some people might experience things like changes in appetite, fatigue, or uncomfortable digestion.
What Does Science Say About the Benefits of CBD?
As scientists do more research about CBD, we learn more about CBD, how it works, what it can do, and how it can contribute to wellness and health. Overall, science supports the use of CBD, other terpenes, cannabinoids, and natural chemicals from the cannabis plant.
Like we said already, humans tolerate CBD oil well. In a 2011 study, scientists found that people can handle 1,500 mg of CBD per day, which is a higher dosage than most people use. This study implies that CBD is safe for most people when they follow the product’s suggested dosage.
In a study from 2017, researchers added new findings to the 2011 study. Again, they concluded that CBD is safe for many individuals, even with higher dosages. However, most researchers suggest that there must be more large-scale studies on humans, especially when researching effects in the long term.
Harvard Health says that we have evidence for health benefits from CBD, including treating epilepsy syndromes, like Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. These particular issues don’t respond well to seizure medication, which makes them hard to treat. The FDA recently approved cannabis-derived medicine to treat these conditions for the first time.
Harvard Health further explains that CBD might be a viable option for anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia management. Some studies connect CBD to benefits in each of those areas, but they emphasize scientists need to study the long-term effects.
In a study in 2020, researchers studied CBD usage between the years 2000 and 2019. These studies involved more than 830 patients given different dosages and formulas for various benefits. Scientists analyzed the evidence and found that CBD helped cognitive functioning, schizophrenia, social anxiety disorder, and other psychiatric and somatic disorders.
A significant drawback of CBD is that there isn’t consistency between different brands and products. CBD used in one specific study can often be very different from CBD in another. The Mayo Clinic talks about a study that found nearly a quarter of every CBD product available online contains fewer CBD than advertised. Some even had THC despite it not labeling it.
People often take CBD oil every day for inflammation, arthritis, and different types of pain, and some studies back up that claim. Northwestern Medicine discusses that there’s a little bit of evidence stating that CBD can help to reduce pain and make it easier for dogs that have osteoarthritis to move around.
In a 2018 study, researchers gave dogs with osteoarthritis 2 mg and 8 mg of CBD per kg of the dog’s weight oil for four weeks. They concluded that dosages as little as 2 mg of CBD per kg of dog two times daily could increase activity and comfort in dogs with osteoarthritis. A study in 2018 originally published in the journal Molecules found that cannabinoids can be helpful for clinical conditions like epilepsy, inflammation, pain, and sleep issues.
Other people use CBD oil for psychological problems, anxiety, and depression, and a few studies show that CBD might help. In a 2015 study, scientists concluded that CBD could treat anxiety disorders like social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety.
Researchers for a 2018 study studied the specific effects of CBD oil on patients that have PTSD. They found that CBD can assist the extending adverse memories to help block reconsolidation.
Some people believe that this oil can help with addiction issues and solve the opioid crisis. That’s because CBD inhibits people’s anxiety and cravings. In this study, 42 recovering drug patients took CBD oil and stated they had reduced cravings after using it. These reduced cravings continued a week after the initial dose.
Researchers need to conduct more studies to state CBD’s benefits definitively, but so far, the research is promising. We learn more about CBD oil and how it affects the mind and body every time a study is released.

Q: Does the FDA approve CBD oils?
A: No. Currently, the FDA doesn’t guarantee the effectiveness, quality, or safety of any CBD product. That might not sound great, but CBD is like supplements, so the FDA doesn’t need to approve them. Even the best keto pills are under the same regulation. The FDA can send warnings to CBD brands, especially those that claim unproven benefits.
Q: Is there a difference between hemp oil and CBD oil?
A: Although some will use the phrases interchangeably, they’re two different things. CBD oil comes from the bud, flower, leaves, and stems from the plant, and hemp seed or hemp oil comes from the cannabis plants’ seeds and doesn’t contain THC.
Q: How should I use CBD oil?
A: Many people use CBD oil underneath their tongues and leave it for a few moments before swallowing. Sometimes, people mix it with food or beverages.
Q: Is CBD safe?
A: Yes, CBD oil is usually safe for people, even in higher doses. This 2011 review discovered that doses of 1,500 mg of CBD each day had no significant side effects in most people tested. Lower-quality CBD oil and other products will likely have more noticeable side effects.
Q: Can I take too much CBD oil?
A: No. Unlike other substances, it’s challenging, if not impossible, to take too much CBD. Even if someone took a whole bottle at once, it probably wouldn’t cause any harmful side effects.
Q: What’s the best CBD oil I can buy?
A: Any oil on this list is among the highest-quality CBD oils you can get. If you decide not to use one of the ones on this list, ensure that you pick a lab-tested, organic, broad, or full-spectrum CBD oil to get the best results.
Q: Are there any other side effects of CBD oil?
A: There are very few adverse side effects with CBD, even with higher dosages. However, some people feel mild side effects such as fatigue, nausea, digestive discomfort, and irritability.
