PCC Natural Markets in Redmond, along with Lacey-based Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care, collected 74 bikes and an assortment of usable bicycle parts as part of Sunday’s collection drive to benefit students in Togo.

The bikes will be distributed to disadvantaged teens for transportation to and from school in Togo, a country in west Africa.

Alaffia founder, president and Togo native, Olowo-n’djo Tchala, helped with the drive and knows first-hand the challenges of overcoming poverty and the impact a simple bicycle can have on a child’s life.

PCC and Alaffia have held bike drives annually since 2008, collecting over 700 bicycles.

“Our customers appreciate this opportunity to give their used bikes a purposeful second life that helps young students escape a future of poverty,” said PCC community relations manager Sara Walsh.

The collection drive included the Redmond store and PCC’s Greenlake store in Seattle, which collected 64 bikes, Walsh said.
