The two Habitat for Humanity affiliates in King County are teaming up for the 2nd annual Build-a-Thon and are looking for volunteers to help build houses while raising money for Habitat.

The event, which runs from Sept. 17-26, will function much like a walk-a-thon. Volunteers will work on Habitat construction sites throughout King County and ask friends and neighbors to sponsor each shift that they work with a financial donation.

Build-a-Thon participants can volunteer at any Habitat building site as well as at Habitat offices in Redmond and Tukwila.

The goal is to raise money to help Habitat build more homes for families earning 60 percent or less of the median income for King County, or less than $50,580 a year for a family of four. Many of these families pay a much larger than normal portion of their income for housing, and often the housing is seriously deficient, with problems such as mold or leaky roofs.

During the Build-a-Thon, family, friends and colleagues can support the work by donating through each volunteer’s personalized fundraising Web site. Corporate support is being sought to help underwrite Build-a-Thon costs in the hope that every dollar raised by volunteers will go directly toward building affordable homes in King County.
