City of Redmond planning director announces retirement

After serving the community for 16 years, Rob Odle will retire as planning director from the City of Redmond on June 5.

“I’ve enjoyed working for the City of Redmond and helping support the growth in the community. I’m looking forward to seeing how Redmond will continue to thrive and change over the coming years,” said Odle.

According to the city, under Odle’s guidance, the planning department focused its efforts on meeting the demand and vision of the community. His department built strong development relationships, leading to significantly increased investment in Downtown Redmond and surrounding regions. His team is credited with transforming the once-suburban Redmond into a burgeoning urban setting. Additionally, Odle implemented change to streamline zoning codes and enhance electronic accessibility during his tenure with the city.

“Rob’s legacy in Redmond includes his leadership, expertise and wisdom,” said Mayor John Marchione. “Rob’s dedication to the community’s vision helped us realize a vibrant downtown, light rail arriving in 2024, a new Overlake Village neighborhood, and many other aspects that make the future of Redmond bright.”

Before joining the City of Redmond in 2001, Odle held a number of positions in Kirkland, Bellevue and the City of Burien. He attained bachelor of science and master of education degrees from the University of Utah and a master of urban planning degree from the University of Washington. Prior to his planning career, he was an educator and anthropologist. He will take an assignment in the mayor’s office starting June 1 through August to finalize a few special projects.

Karen Haluza will join the City of Redmond in early June as the new planning director.
