Evergreen Middle School student’s documentary wins first place at National History Day

Three Lake Washington School District students won awards at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, including one national competition winner.

Three Lake Washington School District students won awards at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, including one national competition winner.

Bobby Aiyer, an eighth-grader at Evergreen Middle School, won the national Junior Individual Documentary division honors on June 16 at the University of Maryland. His entry was “The Awakening of the Sleeping Giant: How Sino-American Rapprochement Triggered China’s Meteoric Rise and What it Means Today.” His teacher was Nicole Kesler.

A team of Redmond Middle School students received the Outstanding State Entry Award. Only two entries from each state received these awards. Eighth-graders Maxine Zhang and Clarissa Choe also placed fourth in Junior Group Website for their entry “Penicillin: The Unsung Hero of World War II.” Their teachers were Liz Dunsire and Leah Smith.

This national event is the final stage of a series of contests at local and state levels.
