Three Lake Washington School District students won awards at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest, including one national competition winner.

Bobby Aiyer, an eighth-grader at Evergreen Middle School, won the national Junior Individual Documentary division honors on June 16 at the University of Maryland. His entry was “The Awakening of the Sleeping Giant: How Sino-American Rapprochement Triggered China’s Meteoric Rise and What it Means Today.” His teacher was Nicole Kesler.

A team of Redmond Middle School students received the Outstanding State Entry Award. Only two entries from each state received these awards. Eighth-graders Maxine Zhang and Clarissa Choe also placed fourth in Junior Group Website for their entry “Penicillin: The Unsung Hero of World War II.” Their teachers were Liz Dunsire and Leah Smith.

This national event is the final stage of a series of contests at local and state levels.
