Feeding frenzy: Couple opens Feed Co. Burgers in downtown Redmond

With a focus on serving roadside, counter service-style food made from higher-quality ingredients, newly opened Feed Co. Burgers in Redmond continues a tradition started by its predecessor.

The new restaurant opens its doors today and is located at 7990 Leary Way N.E. in downtown — the building that previously housed Bill the Butcher.

Owners Scott and Heather Staples opened the restaurant to offer families an alternative to the typical fast food.

For a really long time, Heather said they did not understand why people would go to fast-food restaurants.

It wasn’t until they had children that they got it.

But as owners of a number of restaurants in Seattle (Quinn’s Pub, Restaurant Zoe and Uneeda Burger) — and with Scott being a chef — the couple put their own twist on the traditional burger joint.

While Feed Co. offers their classic burger (a quarter-pound beef patty with options to add various fixings) for $5, there are also more atypical menu items such as lamb and bison burgers ranging from $13.75-$15.

Heather said they also have a hot dog on the menu as well as a veggie burger and gluten-free options. In addition, Feed Co. has a kids menu that allows young diners to pick their choice of a main dish, side and drink.

And like most burger establishments, diners at Feed Co. can also order hand-dipped milkshakes made from Snoqualmie Ice Cream.

And while Feed Co. is a family friendly establishment, adults can also purchase beer or wine — most of which are from local breweries or wineries.

“We want to have things that are connected to the community,” Heather said. “And it’s good, though. It has to be good.”

She said they worked closely with their beer experts at Quinn’s — a pub on Capitol Hill in Seattle — to bring in the right types of beers to go with their burgers. She added that they also offer root beer on tap for kids.

Scott said Feed Co. was inspired by Gott’s Roadside, a high-end roadside restaurant their family has visited down in California. Another source of inspiration for the menu was Scott’s childhood. Growing up, his parents cooked a lot and something his mother often prepared was meat and potatoes with a dry packet of instant French Onion Soup sprinkled on top. Scott said this is what inspired the restaurant’s bison burger.

Heather said it’s been great for them to be in Redmond.

“We’ve wanted to do business on the Eastside,” she said. “We were super delighted to find this location.”

Heather added that being in the more historical part of downtown Redmond — a city with agricultural roots — adds a more authentic feel to Feed Co.

Feed Co. is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and today, as their first day of business, food items are all half price.
