The poems in “Plume” tell stories of growing up in Richland at the height of the Cold War era. In these poems, the author draws from a wellspring of experience. Her father worked at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation for most of his career, as did the parents of most of her childhood friends. Flenniken herself was an engineer at Hanford for eight years before becoming a writer.
