Redmond City Council voted to approve a contract with Wenatchee-based Goodfellow Brothers, Inc., to begin construction on the second phase of the Overlake South Detention Stormwater Vault project.

Phase II of the $29 million project, scheduled to get under way next month, will include the construction of a six-million-gallon stormwater vault and restored parking lot area.

Located in the east parking lot of the Sears store near Northeast 20th Street and 148th Avenue Northeast, the vault (one of three underground stormwater facilities planned for the area) will be the first regional facility to serve Overlake.

Developed by the city and the recipient of a $1 million grant provided by the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE), the structure will store and slowly release stormwater that drains to nearby creeks, significantly reducing erosion and introducing water quality benefits to the stream system.

The project’s first phase, involving the relocation of stormwater facilities and power service, met completion last November.

The vault is scheduled for completion in 2015
