The National Weather Service has issued Excessive Heat and Red Flag Fire Warnings for the Greater Puget Sound Region through Friday evening. The City of Redmond officials would like to remind citizens on how to remain safe during hot weather.

During hot weather:

Check on at-risk friends, family, and neighbors twice a day.

Stay cool. Spend time in air-conditioned buildings such as libraries and shopping malls and avoid direct contact with the sun.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink more.

Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Seek medical care immediately if you think you are experiencing symptoms. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, clammy skin, fainting, and or vomiting.

The very young and the elderly are at the highest risk for heat-related illness. People with chronic health issues, athletes who are exercising outdoors, outdoor workers, and people experiencing homelessness, are also at greater risk and need to take special care to stay hydrated and cool. Seek out public buildings when possible with air conditioning like malls and libraries.

The Redmond Senior Center, located at 8703 160th Ave. N.E., is air conditioned and open until 9 p.m. this evening and 8:30 am to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Red Flag Fire Warnings that indicate critical fire weather conditions are occurring now. Dry, hot and windy conditions can contribute to elevated fire dangers. Wildfires burn every year in East King County before fire dangers strike, homeowners can help protect lives and property.
