Earlier this morning, Redmond police arrested a 51-year-old Colorado man after he sped away from an officer during a routine traffic stop.

Officers used spike strips to deflate the man’s tire near the State Route 520/Interstate-405 interchange. Police then apprehended the man, who was arrested for failure to obey a police officer and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

A Redmond police officer first spotted the man in Redmond driving southbound on 176th Avenue Northeast approaching Northeast 65th Street and tried to pull over the vehicle around 1:20 a.m. because of “suspicious driving patterns,” according to police spokesman Jim Bove. But the man sped off in his vehicle on SR-520 in an attempt to get away.

The officer did not initiate a pursuit, but instead radioed for assistance from other officers. Another Redmond police officer identified the fleeing vehicle minutes later near the SR-520/I-405 interchange. With other officers having shut down oncoming traffic on SR-520, the officer deployed the tire-deflation device, which forced the suspect vehicle to come to a safe and controlled stop.

The man was arrested without incident and it was discovered he also had a misdemeanor warrant for driving with a suspended license. SR-520 was re-opened to regular traffic within a half-hour.
