Volunteers helped plant trees at Marymoor Park on Oct. 10 as part of the King County goal of planting 1 million trees by the end of 2020.

Around 50 people pitched in with the county as it kicked off the fall tree-planting season.

Future events will be held where more trees will be planted in county parks.

The 1 Million Trees partnership is a multi-year effort to confront carbon pollution while improving the health of natural habitats and neighborhoods across the county, a press release from County Executive Dow Constantine’s office said.

Planting the trees is part of the 2015 Strategic Climate Action Plan that is a road map for how the county will reduce carbon pollution, increase transit, protect open spaces and prepare communities for the impacts of a changing climate, the release said.

Residents can also plant trees and add them to a database and interactive map at kingcounty.gov/milliontrees. They are then entered to win prizes from drawings.

Plantings will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday.

The county will provide shovels, gloves and instructions and volunteers should wear warm clothes and be ready to get dirty, the release said.
