Redmond teams continue to dominate Hopelink’s sixth annual Can Madness food drive, with nine competitors surviving their head-to-head first-round brackets and moving on to the round of 16. Last week, 32 teams combined brought in a first-round record 7,445 pounds of food and $850 in cash.

The nine remaining Redmond teams join seven other competitors from Kirkland, Bellevue, Shoreline and Seattle in round two of the drive to help stock the agency’s five food banks. In Redmond, defending champ Redmond Physical Therapy and perennial powerhouse Hancock’s Bakery are joined by 180 Degrees Chiropractic, CrossFit Fuse, Dace’s Rock n’ More Music Academy, Home Team Real Estate, JJ Mahoney’s, Redmond Rotary Foundation and Universal Avionics.

Two Bellevue teams remain in the competition — AvalonBay Communities and TJ Maxx. Kirkland teams entering round two are CSA Group, Lake Washington Physical Therapy and Xtreme Consulting. Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy will represent Shoreline, and Seattle contender Magnum Self Storage moves on, as well.

The drive is patterned after the national spring college basketball tournament, matching businesses in weekly competitions to see which can bring in the most food. Teams are bracketed together in pairs and one winner from each two-member bracket advances to the following week. The competition will continue until the winner is announced April 3.
