Edward James Olmos, a community activist and actor currently playing the role of Admiral Adama in television’s “Battlestar Galactica,” will be the keynote speaker at Hopelink’s 13th annual fundraising luncheon on Monday, Oct. 20.

Comcast is the presenting sponsor for the luncheon, at which Olmos will share his perspectives and personal experience with building community and addressing community needs in a presentation entitled “We’re All in the Same Gang.”

While Edward James Olmos is well-known for his portrayals of Jaime Escalante, the math teacher, in the film “Stand and Deliver” and Lt. Castillo on television’s “Miami Vice,” he is also an energetic advocate for the disadvantaged and a humanitarian who takes on projects to help people in need in the U.S. and around the world. Olmos recognizes the urgent needs of his fellow human beings and addresses them in the best way he knows how — by taking action.

Hopelink’s 2007 luncheon raised more than $1 million to fund its more than 40 services for families, children and senior citizens living in poverty. Scott and Allyson Svenson, 2008 luncheon co-chairs, are looking forward to surpassing that impressive amount this year as corporate and community leaders come together in support of Hopelink. The Svensons and their four young sons are very committed as a family to working together to help families in need in north and east King County communities. Given the tough economic times, more people than ever need our collective support to keep fed, clothed and housed, while taking steps to get back on their feet for the long-term.
