Parents can get a handle on camps with 6crickets.com

Last spring, when Helen Wang was trying to figure out her two sons’ summer camp schedules, she found the experience frustrating and overwhelming as there were just too many choices.

With 12 weeks in the summer — minus two weeks for vacation — she and her husband, Adam Costello, had 10 weeks to figure out where to send their boys while they were at work.

“I had such a hard time,” Wang said.

With most camps lasting a week, the Redmond resident said that made for anywhere from 10-20 camps to schedule — depending on whether the boys (ages 5 and 7) attended the same or separate camps. Wang said she had to manually visit the websites for dozens of camps to see if they would fit into her family’s schedule, her sons’ interests and if they were conveniently located. And once the couple figured out where to send their sons, there were the registration forms to fill out for each camp.

“That really drove me nuts,” Wang said as the forms all asked for the same type of information, including emergency contacts, doctor contact information and the names of the people who could pick up the boys.

She also tried to coordinate a carpool with a friend whose children would be attending one of the same camps as her sons — only to realize the dates the kids would be attending were off by a week.

All of these frustrations have led Wang and Costello to do something to address the issue.

That something is 6crickets.com, a website that launched on March 5 and is designed to make scheduling summer camps for parents much easier. With just a few clicks, parents can search for camps that their children would be interested in, fit into their schedules and are geographically convenient. In addition, parents can register using a universal form that would be accepted with most of the camps and pay with the click of the mouse. Though Wang added that some camps are not able to accept payment through 6crickets and parents would need to pay onsite. In short, she said, parents can do everything they need in one place, rather than visiting website after website and filling out form after form.

“The parents enjoy this a lot,” Wang said.

Drew Roselli, a Woodinville resident with a 9-year-old daughter, had heard about the frustrations parents went through when it came to figuring out summer camps for their children. That’s why she was not looking forward to going through the process. Previously, she had been working at Microsoft Corp. and there was a camp located near her job where she sent her daughter. This year, she works somewhere else, so she has been faced with the task of figuring out her daughter’s summer camp schedule.

“I have been avoiding this problem,” she said.

But then she heard about what Wang — a friend — was doing and their website, 6crickets. After perusing the website, Roselli found camps she would not have found otherwise. She said while different camps and organizations offer good classes, the same cannot always be said about their websites. Roselli said the search features on their sites are not easy to navigate to find what she needed.

For example, Roselli has signed her daughter up for a camp through the Pacific Science Center, which she found through 6crickets. She said even though she is a member of the science center, she would not have been able to find the camp through its website. In addition, Roselli has found other camps such as tennis and martial arts that she will be looking into for the summer.

Roselli also plans to share her daughter’s camp schedule with other parents — another feature on 6crickets — so they can coordinate and her daughter can attend camps with her friends.

Wang added that this schedule-sharing feature can also help with carpooling and other logistics.

Like Roselli, Heather Ure Dunagan enjoys 6crickets for the new ideas the site introduces her to. The Redmond resident is a mother of four and said whenever summer approaches, she begins to feel stressed as she schedules activities for her kids.

“I don’t have a lot of time,” Ure Dunagan said.

She said she likes that 6crickets provides everything in one spot.

Currently, Wang said the site has about 40 camp providers listed in their database and they are constantly working to add more. She said while the website offers convenience for parents, 6crickets is also beneficial for providers as it is another place for them to get the word out about their programs — helping them to fill spots.

“We really strive to serve the parents and the (camp providers),” Wang said.
