Paving to close down intersection of Union Hill and Avondale Roads

The intersection of Union Hill and Avondale Roads (at the end of SR 520) will effectively close for two weekends in order for construction crews to lay concrete paving as part of the city’s Union Hill Road Widening project.

Weather permitting, this major construction impact will occur from 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 to 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29 and again, at the same times, on the following weekend, Friday, Oct. 3 to Monday, Oct. 6. Traffic on the Avondale Road/SR 520 corridor will be reduced to one lane in each direction. On Union Hill Road, there will be no access between 178th Place Northeast at Gold’s Gym west to Avondale Way.

Area detours will be in place, but delays in this area during these times must be expected. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes whenever possible.

When completed, this project will increase the capacity of the intersection by constructing dedicated right turn lanes from SR 520 to Union Hill Road, from Union Hill Road to Avondale Road northbound and from Avondale Road to Union Hill Road westbound. One additional through lane will also be added to Avondale Road leading onto SR 520. These improvements will increase traffic flow, allowing more cars to get through the signal during peak periods.
