Pedestrian killed in head-on collision on Redmond Way

A pedestrian was killed Thursday night around 10 p.m. after being struck head-on by a car near the intersection of Redmond Way and 180th Avenue Northeast.

An 83-year-old man was killed Thursday night around 10 p.m. after being struck head-on by a car near the intersection of Redmond Way and 180th Avenue Northeast.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian who was killed as Eleuther Veevaert.

There are no indications that drugs or alcohol were involved or that the driver, a 26-year-old Eastside man, committed any traffic infractions, according to a Redmond Police Department (RPD) press release.

Redmond police officer Todd Bowman was off-duty when he witnessed the collision while he had stopped at the Shell gas station near 18000 Redmond Way.

Bowman was fueling his personal vehicle when he heard tires squeal. He looked up to see a 2006 Volkswagen GTI traveling westbound on Redmond Way, about 600 feet east of the intersection.

Bowman saw the Volkswagen brake hard and then hit a pedestrian, who was not in a crosswalk, but in a lane clearly marked for vehicles, according to the press release.

Bowman, who has been with RPD for more than 15 years, called for assistance while running to the pedestrian, who was lying in the road. He could not locate a pulse and determined first aid could not be attempted due to the severity of the pedestrian’s injuries.

Redmond police Lt. Tim Gately said the pedestrian sustained injuries to his head, neck, shoulders and back.

“He got struck head on by the car,” Gately said.

Redmond Police Traffic Unit is investigating the collision, and Gatley said the driver will probably not face any charges.

The collision had closed off Redmond Way just east of and East Lake Sammamish Parkway but Gately said all lanes are now open.
